This article explains how to install the Simcenter Testlab RLM 17.1 License server and set up the license file.

Before or after the license server is installed, use one of the following articles to install Simcenter Testlab.

1.1 Installing the RLM License Server

The Simcenter Testlab RLM 17.1 License server is installed from the main Testlab installation menu.

Click on the option called “Install RLM License server” to begin the installation.

Initial window of the Simcenter Testlab Setup Wizard.

Click "Next" on the first pop up window to begin the installation.

Click “Next” through the installation to choose all default settings.

You will reach a window asking if you want to install a dongle driver.  Be sure to remove any dongle from the computer before installing a dongle driver.

Click “Next” through the rest of the installation to choose all default settings.

Click "Install."  Once the server installation is complete, login credentials must be set up within 10 minutes for the RLM server to function.

1.2 Setting Up the Login Credentials

As of version 15.1.0, the RLM License Server requires the administrator login credentials to be set up; for more details, please refer to the article RLM 15.1 delivered with Simcenter Testlab 2306 : No licenses available if admin password has been left empty or equal to "admin".  As of RLM 17.1, the password further has strength requirements.

To set up the credentials for the first time, log into the RLM licensing service by any of the following methods:

  • By clicking the link on the final page of the installation wizard,
  • By locating the "RLM Server Info" link in the Start Menu under the "Simcenter RLM 17.1 License server" folder,
  • Or by opening a web browser and going to https://localhost:5054.

Locating the RLM Server Info link in the Start Menu

Enter the word "admin" as both the username and password to log in for the first time.  (Note that older versions of the License Server used http rather than https and a blank password as the default.)

Logging in with the default admin username and password

A prompt to set a new, strong password for the web interface will then appear.  Create a password that satisfies the requirements, then click "ACCEPT" to set the password and complete the setup.  If more than ten minutes have passed since installing the RLM License Server, restart the computer so that the license service can be initialized with the new password.

Designating a strong new password

Be sure to use a password that you'll be able to remember, or write it down, because the increase in security for RLM 17.1 means that the password does not have the same recovery method as RLM 15.1 and earlier if it is forgotten.

2. Dongle troubleshooting: Installing the Sentinel HASP LDK dongle driver

If you are having licensing issues after you have completed the previous steps, the first step is to reboot the computer. If the issue persists and you are using an RLM dongle, there are two options to fix this: to reinstall the latest dongle driver from the supplier's site, or to reinstall the dongle driver included in the License Server's installation files.  For more information and troubleshooting steps, or for FlexLM dongle driver installation, please first refer to the article Which dongle driver should I install for my dongle? How can I check if the dongle is working?

2.1 Installing from the provider's website

To ensure the most recent version of the RLM dongle driver, download it from the Gemalto (Thales) website.  Open a web browser and search for "Drivers and Runtime Gemalto," then click on the link to Drivers & Runtime Packages of the Gemalto Support Portal.

Gemalto Drivers & Runtime.

In the Gemalto (Thales) Support Portal, search for "HASP LDK Windows GUI Runtime" and select the current version of the Sentinel HASP/LDK Windows GUI Runtime Installer.

Locating the Sentinel HASP LDK Windows GUI Runtime Installer.

Click on the hyperlink to download the dongle driver.

The HASP/LDK download link.

Accept the license agreement, and the file will begin to download. Once the file downloads, browse to it in Windows File Explorer. Right click on the zip folder that says Sentinel LDK run time setup and extract it.

Ensure that the dongle is not currently plugged into the computer, then open the extracted folder and right click on the executable file named HASPUserSetup to run as administrator.

Running the setup as administrator.

2.2 Installing from the License Server files

To use the dongle driver installer included with the License Server installation, open Windows File Explorer and go to C:\Program Files\Simcenter\RLM 17.1 License Server\Licensing\Drivers\Sentinel_LDK_Run-time-setup. Ensure that the dongle is not currently plugged into the computer, then right click on the executable file named HASPUserSetup, and run as administrator.

Running the setup as administrator.

3. Setting up the license files

Once the RLM license server is installed, as well as the dongle driver if necessary, you can set up your license.

You must have an updated license file for the software version you are using. If you need an updated license file, contact the Siemens Support Center with your sold-to and your request.

If you are using a dongle, server, or PC, make sure you have all the corresponding license files.

Once you have these license files, place them in the license folder.
The default location for this is C:\ProgramData\lms\licensing.

The license folder.

Copy the license file or license files to that location.  Any time you have new or updated license files, you must put them in this location.

Run the "reread_localhost.bat" utility from the Start Menu, or from its file location in C:\Program Files\Simcenter\RLM 17.1 License Server\Licensing\Bin. The pop-up window should give the message “Reread command successfully sent to RLM server,” followed by your host name.

The reread_localhost.bat file.

You should be able to start Simcenter Testlab with no problems.  Specify the license server as localhost or 5053@localhost when starting Testlab.

If you run into problems during this process, please contact Siemens Support Center office at the appropriate phone number listed on Siemens Support Center Website and have your sold-to ready. For example, the phone number for North America is 1-800-955-0000.
